What?
LaTeX is a high-quality typesetting system, with features designed for the production of technical and scientific documentation. LaTeX is the de facto standard for the communication and publication of scientific documents. But even for the lay-out of straightforward text, LaTeX produces well-structured documents of a quality and beauty that is simply beyond word processors such as MS Word. LaTeX is not a word processor.
Instead, LaTeX encourages authors not to worry too much about the appearance of their documents, but to concentrate on getting the right content. Furthermore, LaTeX is secure, highly portable, and free.
Drawbacks? Sure. LaTeX has a fairly steep learning curve. That's why a little help can be very useful. In a series of 4 workshops, of 3 hours each, LaTeX will be introduced to you. Subjects covered include:
* titles, sections, chapters, and the like
* internal referencing, footnotes, citations and bibliography
* lists, tables and figures
* mathematical and technical formulas
* getting things done faster with macros
After the workshops you will be able to typeset almost any text in LaTeX and produce a beautiful dissertation.
For whom?
For all Phd students who are member of a Doctoral School and who want to write scientific articles and texts using LaTeX.
Where and When?
Monday the 3rd and Monday the 10th of May 2009 at the Campus Etterbeek. More information on the exact location will be made available to you soon.
Price and Registration
Participation is free of charge for PhD students enrolled at the VUB who are member of a Doctoral School. Registration for the workshops is required, and can be done here as of March 22nd. Places are limited. The registration will (in principle) close two weeks prior to the start of the activity. After this closure, acceptance will be communicated to the participants and to the people on the waiting list, by e-mail.
We kindly ask you to register only once and only when you can actually participate. In case you have already registered but are not able to participate, please be so kind as to notify us by sending an e-mail to doctoral.schools@vub.ac.be so we can offer your place to one of your PhD colleagues on the waiting list.
