Short description:

The aim of this workshop is to extend the basic knowledge of the participants about Regression Analysis and to provide practical advice on how and when to use specific techniques in RA.

Competences:

  • understanding the commonalities and differences between regression analysis and ANOVA and when to use each
  • use of syntax rules in SPSS
  • learn to detect common mistakes in interpreting regression coefficients
  • working with hierarchical regression analysis
  • learn to use interaction terms in regression equations and how to plot and interpret them

Previous knowledge:

Basic knowledge of Regression Analysis (at the Masters level).

Content:

In this workshop the focus will be on the combination of a conceptual and a hands-on approach. In this seminar several topics concerning linear regression techniques will be discussed. In order to correct the ubiquitous "statistics as techniques" attitude, we will emphasize the important relationship between the substantive research questions and the comparison of different regression models. In particular, hierarchical linear regression analysis will be discussed and illustrated in SPSS. Further, the focus will be on the analysis of residuals and the quality of the data. Also, working with interaction terms in regression analysis will be introduced. This effective yet underused extension offers the researcher more possibilities to test substantive hypotheses.

Price and Registration

Participation is free of charge for PhD students enrolled at the VUB who are member of a Doctoral School. Registration for the workshops is required. Places are limited. The registration will (in principle) close two weeks prior to the start of the activity. After this closure, acceptance will be communicated to the participants and to the people on the waiting list, by e-mail.

We kindly ask you to register only once and only when you can actually participate. In case you have already registered but are not able to participate, please be so kind as to notify us by sending an e-mail to doctoral.schools@vub.ac.be so we can offer your place to one of your PhD colleagues on the waiting list.
