In this workshop the focus will be on the combination of a conceptual and a hands-on approach. In this seminar several topics concerning linear regression techniques will be discussed. In order to correct the ubiquitous "statistics as techniques" attitude, we will emphasize the important relationship between the substantive research questions and the comparison of different regression models. In particular, hierarchical linear regression analysis will be discussed and illustrated in SPSS. Further, the focus will be on the analysis of residuals and the quality of the data. Also, working with interaction terms in regression analysis will be introduced. This effective yet underused extension offers the researcher more possibilities to test substantive hypotheses. Finally, the possibilities of path analysis and structural equation modeling are explored.
